Google's E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) framework is essential for small business websites aiming to boost their search rankings and online credibility. Understanding and optimizing for E-E-A-T not only influences Google's perception of your site but also shapes user trust and engagement. These factors will become increasingly more important as the use of Ai generated content rises and saturates the online space.
For small businesses, E-E-A-T is crucial as it directly affects how their website is evaluated by Google, influencing both search visibility and user trust. Having a high E-E-A-T scores help improve search rankings, increase user engagement, and build consumer trust, making it imperative for small businesses to align their content with these guidelines. As small businesses will likely not have the same volume of content on their websites as their larger competitors, it is crucial to create GREAT content that offers value and personal insight to your audience.
Practical Steps to Optimize Content for E-E-A-T
1. Showcase Real Experience: Authenticity in content plays a key role, especially for small businesses. Share personal stories and customer interactions to enhance the "Experience" dimension of E-E-A-T. For example, at Ignite Performance Marketing we like to share case studies of past clients and how specific strategies we implemented worked for their businesses.
2. Demonstrate Expertise and Authority: It's important to produce in-depth content that covers topics comprehensively, backed by credible sources and links to authoritative sites. (And example of this can be seen at the end of this paragraph) Googles algorithm has become so advanced, that the search engine can now tell who a specific person of interest is, and knows whether they have authority in other areas of the web. I personally think this may be a great opportunity to bring back popularity to “The Guest Blog”. Click here for a larger breakdown on what a guest blog is.
3. Build Trust through Transparency: Being transparent about the business's backstory, the authors, and the company's mission contributes significantly to trustworthiness. Just as Google knows whether a certain individual has authority based on other information across the web, it does the same with businesses. Referencing reviews, customer testimonials and external inbound links from credible sources can all help build trust in the search engines “virtual eyes”. This is also a great time to lean on the human side of your business, showcasing who you and your staff are, expanding on the overall reach of recognition.
4. Regular Content Review and Updates: Keep your content up-to-date and reflective of the latest information to maintain high standards of relevance and accuracy. Outdated and unhelpful content can actually hinder the ranking of your website as a whole. Make sure any outdated content is updated, and low performing content is removed from the site to ensure you’re not hurting your best stuff. We recommend our clients do a review of their blog articles at least once a year. As part of that review we recommend changing any articles that mention a certain year to the current year, checking the article for out of date content and updating it if necessary. Not only is outdated content a hinderance to your SERP rankings, but it can also hurt your credibility.
5. Utilize High-Quality Backlinks: Encourage reputable websites to link back to your site to enhance its authoritativeness through guest blogging and collaborations. The key here is REPUTABLE… Your strategy should not be to build thousands of low quality backlinks. Although this strategy may have worked in the past, Google’s algorithm has become much more advanced. When building backlinks, keep E.E.A.T. In mind, remembering that Google also wants to see experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust from the reffering website to value that backlink.
Additional Strategies to Further Enhance E-E-A-T
6. Content Structuring and Readability: Use clear headings, subheadings, and concise paragraphs to make content digestible and easy to navigate, enhancing both readability and user experience. You should also ensure you are always using the correct H1-H6 HTML headings to give your site a proper hierarchy and let the search engines know what content is most important. If you are unfamiliar with HTML structure and create and edit content on your own site, I would highly recommend doing some research on this topic.
7. User Experience (UX): A fast-loading, mobile-friendly, and easy-to-navigate site enhances user engagement, signaling to Google that the website is a valuable resource. Currently, it is estimated that at least 60% of all website traffic is viewed on a mobile device. Having a mobile optimized website is not only critical for Google but also for your user experience.
8. Community Engagement: Engage with your audience through comments, forums, or social media. Responsiveness can boost E-E-A-T by showing that the business values customer interaction. Google and social media platforms are becoming increasingly better at. “Weeding out” spammy websites and social media profiles. Showing genuine and valuable engagement with your audience will help increase your credibility.
9. Diversify Content Types: Including various content types such as videos, infographics, and podcasts caters to different user preferences, increasing engagement and time spent on the site. Depending on your target audience, it is important here to cater your content type to be easily digestible and engaging.
10. Monitor Content Performance: Use tools like Google Analytics to understand content performance, helping refine your strategy to better meet user needs and E-E-A-T criteria. Working with a Marketing Agency such as Ignite Performance Marketing can help immensely with tracking analytics.
11. Develop a Long-Term Content Strategy: Align content with long-term business goals and user needs, planning for regular updates and addressing common customer questions to build authority over time. With our clients, we like to plan out our content strategy about a month in advance. This allows adequate time to develop a long term plan, whilst not being so far in advance that we are not taking capatalizing on currently trends and changes in the industry and the brand itself.
12. Personal Branding and Storytelling: Share your business's unique stories to create a personal connection with the audience, enhancing authenticity and trustworthiness. As I continue to preach, we need to continue to lean on the human side of our business and brand. With the over saturation of Ai and “spammy” content, it is more important than ever to showcase who we are as PEOPLE and connect more intimately with our audience.
For small business websites, aligning with Google's E-E-A-T guidelines is crucial for building a trustworthy online presence that resonates with both search engines and users. By focusing on genuine experience, proven expertise, authoritative content, and transparent trust signals, businesses can enhance their digital footprint and foster stronger customer relationships.
